Russian Verbs without 1st Person Singular

Did you know that some Russian verbs do not have the form of the 1st person singular (я, “I do” or “I am doing something”) because they just do not sound well (for phonetical reasons)? We avoid these forms in speech because they just do not exist.

Some of these verbs are:

  • победить, to win
  • дудеть, to play the pipe
  • затмить, to eclipse
  • очутиться, to find oneself somewhere
  • дерзить, to be rude to somebody
  • убедить, to convince, etc.
