Russian Participles: General Characteristics

Did you know that Russian participles can be imperfective or perfective, present and past. They take these features from the verbs they are formed from. However, they also have some features from the adjectives, such as gender, number and case.

For example,

  1. У читающего человека (the person who is reading has…): present active participle, imperfective, masculine, singular, Genetive case.
  2. О работавшей бабушке (about the grandmother who was working): past active participle, imperfective, feminine, singular, Prepositional case), etc.
