Russian Conditionals without если

November 20, 2018 | Tags: Russian conditional mood

Did you know that sometimes we don’t use если (if) in conditional clauses? They just start with the verb in the Past tense, followed by the participle бы. The meaning is the same as with если.

For example,

Если бы я был на твоём месте, я бы не поехал учиться за границу. If I were you. I wouldn’t have gone abroad to study.

Был бы я на твоём месте, я бы не поехал учиться за границу. If I were you. I wouldn’t have gone abroad to study.
