Dative Case with the Noun памятник

August 3, 2018 | Tags: Russian Dative case

Did you know that the noun памятник is always used with the Dative case in the sense of “a monument to somebody”? Some students use the Genitive case with this noun (памятник Пушкина), but it is incorrect.

For example,

На бульваре стоял памятник Гоголю. There was a monument to Gogol on the boulevard.

Здесь хотят поставить памятник Высоцкому. They want to put a monument to Vysotsky here.
