Negation in Russian

April 23, 2018 | Tags: Negation in Russian

Did you know that we use double negation in Russian? We use both a negative pronoun and the negative particle before the verb.

For example,

  1. Я ничего не знаю. I don’t know anything. Literally: “I know nothing”.
  2. Сергей никуда не поехал. Sergey didn’t go anywhere. Literally: “Sergey went nowhere”.
  3. Они никогда не были в Испании. They have never been to Spain.
  4. Мы нигде не можем найти ключи. We can’t find the keys anywhere. Literally: “We can find the keys nowhere”.
